Even Subway cuts corners (on your health)

You saw the debacle of Taco Bell preaching about there new diet menu. The Drive-Thru Diet. Give me a break. It’s fast food. Very hard to find healthy fast food. Even fast foods ‘good’ foods aren’t that healthy. Have you seen Food Inc.? Where do you those hamburgers and chicken come from? It’s a billion dollar industry, and they don’t really care about you. They just want you to keep coming back and spending more aNd more money with them, regardless of what happens to your health and body.
Which brings me to Subway. Are they fast food? I don’t know. But they’re known for the Fit Club Menu, which features a certAin number of six inch subs under 6 grams of fat.
And then they’re is their spokesman, Jared.
Jared was an extremely overweight person, 400 pounds I think. And he lost a whole bunch of weight and now is living at an acceptBle weight. He did it all just eating from Subways Fit Club.
That’s awesome!
But what Subway doesn’t make real public to you and the rest of the world is their ingredients. Sure they will give you the calories and nutritional information. It’s law now for every fast food restaurant. And you surely know that the veggies are healthy for you, but I was told that there was a big problem with Subways bread.

First off when you order your wheat bread you really aren’t getting whole wheat bread. The bread is enriched. It’s a lot cheaper to produce. Basically what it is is the wheat stalk has been removed and it’s been procesed down. So it really has the same properties as white bread.
The benefits of whole wheat and whole grains is that you get a steady stream of energy given to you over a period of time until your next feeding. White, enriched or processed breads spikes your blood sugar levels really fast and gives you a quick surge of energy but you crash down rather quickly.
It also greatly increases your risk for obesity and obviously makes you feel like crap.
But the thing is that most people who go to Subway don’t just go in and eat the bread. There is lots of other stuff they order on it. Meat, veggies, oils. The other stuff evens out the spike in blood sugar, so to speak (especially the protein).
But even so, that still doesn’t excuse the fact that Subway markets there bread as healthy.
Below is a list of the ingredients in Subways bread (and there’s even a surprise one I haven’t mentioned yet– can you guess what it is
Ok, Don’t know what’s going on with my upload but it’s not working. Anyway you can go here to view the ingredients: Subway Ingredient List

I'll Wait For You
Now did you look at the 9-Grain Wheat Bread? Wheat you would think would be the healthiest on the menu.
In order for something to be consider ‘whole wheat’ it needs to say ‘WHOLE WHEAT’ as the first ingredient. And did you notice the special ingredient in there. It was #4- High Fructose Corn Syrup!
Holy _____, Batman!
Now High Fructose Corn Syrup deserves it’s own article. It’s that bad! Here’s one I wrote way back in 2008.
High fructose corn syrup lies
I heard about Subway’s bread about 5 months ago, but just didn’t have the time to do the research, or maybe I just didn’t want to believe it. Subway was a weekly thing. My usual order was the footlong chicken breast with spinach, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, jalapenos, pickles, and olive oil.
But since doing the research about 6 weeks ago, haven’t been back. Last time I went was to get some gift cards for the Super Awesome Drawing and Sweet Prizes and stuff for my bootcampers. But no more. Think I’ll switch to Panera. But maybe I should do the research on that too

Yes I completely agree with this article!!! A lot of people don’t know that you need to read the labels of EVERYTHING before consuming!! LOL I always buy the same bread Brownberry Whole Wheat Classic becuase I know that this is made with whole wheat. But I haven’t found bread without the corn syrup or sugar. Any suggestions???
I will be only TOO excited if you find meals under $7 that are genuinely healthy. Corn is cheap, so corn and its byproducts dominate fast food. Happy hunting!
Kari,
Brownberry should have a no corn syrup version. There sugar content is lower then most companies. But try whole foods or trader joes.
It will never be as healthy as it can be if it’s fast food, shiloh.
I still love the fact that no other sandwich gives you the amount of veggies on it that a Subway sub does. Is there a “least worst” bread? Convenience is key when you have 2 40+ hour a week working members of the family.
Good knowledge though.
I enjoy their salads made with all of my favorite fresh veggies. Dressing can be on the side or on the salad.
Sometimes, running late for work, right across the street from Micky D’s sits the Subway, so you want to do the lesser of two evils. Just always wondered why they didn’t do right by their bread.
Wow, all the breads have some form of sugar in them. Maybe that’s typical. I don’t know. I guess I could do worse like that Taco Bell I did yesterday. Love the squirrel. Is that the super hero version of you Jason?
Every type of bread has sugar in it. If there was no sugar there would be nothing for the yeast to feed off of. If you have no food for the yeast you have no fermentation, which means no rising of the bread.
Different types of sugar are used to give the bread different characteristics in terms of amount of browning, how the bread holds water, how quickly it will stale, etc.
Of course it’s always a good idea to read nutrition labels and see what is in the food that you are consuming. A sugar source shouldn’t be listed first on the label but it’s unrealistic to expect that the bread doesn’t have any sugar in it. I like Jimmy John’s because they actually scoop out the bread and if you bug them they will load it with veggies too.
Yeah, I was bummed when I read the 100% whole wheat bread I was eating had corn syrup in it too–listed second. I am going to try Raisin Rack to see what they offer.
Please post if you find a good one!
What is a good whole wheat bread brand?
Not to mention all the nitrates in the meat… proven to be cancer causing!
most of the brands at trader joes or whole foods will be good. in a regular super market, browberry, or try the health food section. but always check the ingredients no matter what brand it is and what the package says
