Tommy’s off the couch and on the ice!

The following was an email I received from a new reader of my newsletter. It goes to show you how much is possible in such a very little time if you put your mind to it. And getting your mind to believe you can do it is the most important part of changing yourself for the better!

Hi, Jason… hope you’re well.  You said you would love to hear of my experience with my training… so here it is.

First, a little back-story; I grew-up in Upstate New York and played hockey all through my youth… Midgets, Pee Wee, High School, (I was the Capt. of the team) even played one season of Minor League semi-pro Hockey… then the 60′s came along and discovered, sex, drugs and Rock & Roll and hung-up the skates.

Fast-forward to now, 35 years later… two months ago, I came up with the bright idea to play hockey again in an Over 40′s League… I’m 62 years old, 5’11″, weighed 215 lbs, 38-40″ waist, smoked 1-2 packs of cigarettes a day and my favorite piece of exercise equipment was the remote control.  I COULD NOT do 3 push-ups!!  I had problems with my knees, could not walk without a limp… I was a fat, lazy slug who thought… “Hell, I used to be good, I’ll play hockey again!”  WRONG!!  I hit the ice and thought, “I’ve made a big mistake!”  It was not pretty :)

Because of the fitness guidance and research I’ve done on trainers like yourself and my 65 year old brother (he is a kettlebell and cross-fit trainer) here is what happened to me in the last two months… and the ONLY CARDIO I do is when I’m on the ice doing skating and hockey drills 2-3 times a week.

I’m off cigarettes and smoke-free, 1st time in 40 years.
I do an intense kettlebell routine 4-5 times a week (using 25 & 35lb kettlebells)
I work with a BOSU Balance Trainer w/25lb kettlebell for my legs and balance.
I do 3 sets of 30+ push-ups on the BOSU… daily!
I work with a medicine ball and stretch bands.
I now weigh 185, lost 30lbs.
My waist is now 33″, my legs, chest and arms are all bigger and much stronger.
I skate and train with some guys in their 20′s and they can’t keep up with me and they’re good skaters!!
My knees don’t hurt at all.  The Dr.’s were talking to me last year about having knee replacement surgery on both knees!!
My entire body is in much better shape… it’s crazy!!
And… I LOOK MUCH BETTER NAKED :)

Jason, because of interval training, eating right and getting my lazy ass busy… I feel better and stronger than I ever have… I’m skating with authority and more than a couple of teams have asked me to play with them… I look forward to working out… there’s a smile on my face and a bounce in my step I thought was long-gone.

Thank you, Jason, for your inspiration!  I’m 62 years old and living the dream.  Early Sept. I will be right-side defenseman on a Hockey Team… and “They’re going down!”  Keep doing what you do!
